As far as woodworking and carpentry is concerned I am not exactly an expert but it is something that has always interested me and in more recent years it's become a fun hobby of mine. In fact, I have inspired quite a few people to start their own woodworking projects and one of the most common questions I get asked is where I get my plans.
This is important since plans can cost a ton of money and if you're not careful you can end up spending a small fortune on horrible plans. It took me a while to find the perfect woodworking plans and I made a lot of mistakes purchasing much more expensive plans before I found the ones I am using now.

The best woodshop projects for those who have not worked in the shop much before are projects that are not too difficult but that still turn out a nice, useful product. If you want to try your hand at building something for the first time, this is the kind of project that you should look for. If you are going to be helping someone who is interested in working on their craft, you should get this type of a project for them. It will provide them with a sense of accomplishment that will spur them to have a desire for woodworking, but it will not be so difficult that they will find it daunting. You do not want them to be too intimidated, or they may think that they cannot learn enough to have success.

One of the best project that you can work on is a bookshelf. To begin with, this is very large, so it will feel more impressive. The person who builds it will come away from the project with something that they can show off to their friends and family members. This is also a fairly versatile project in that it can be used in almost any room in the home. If they person wants, they can put things other than books on the shelves, making it fit in perfectly in a kitchen or living room. The steps to build the bookshelf will be broken down more below. As you will see, this is not all that difficult.

You must begin by building the sides, the top, and the bottom. Measure out two boards that are as tall as you want the unit to be. If it is going to reach to the ceiling, leave around two inches of space for the top board and bottom board. The sides will need to be as deep as you want the bookshelf to be since this sets the framework for the whole project. For instance, you could cut sides that are six feet tall and one foot deep. You then need to create a top and bottom that are a foot thick and three and a half feet long.
To make the shelves, you just need to cut boards that are exactly like the top and the bottom but one inch shorter. You can make as many shelves as you would like. You can then cut half-inch dados into the boards that you used for the sides. The shelves can be fit into these cuts, and then they can be glued into place. You can secure the top and the bottom with screws and glue.
The last step is just to devise a back and screw that on as well. Many people like particle board, but you could also use multiple panels of a thicker type of board. Either way, this will not take long. When this bookshelf has been sanded down and varnished, it will look beautiful even though it is one of the easiest woodshop projects around.
